Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) explains the internationally recognised method of evaluating tree health, structure and stability through careful observation of external features. Developed from the biomechanical principles established by Dr. Claus Mattheck, VTA enables experienced arborists to interpret growth patterns, defects and adaptive responses that may indicate internal structural conditions. The article examines indicators such as branch architecture, buttressing, cracks, cavities, decay, bark abnormalities, lean and crown condition while emphasising the importance of species characteristics and site context.
